CAT exams simulate the real NCLEX by using the same methodology and cut-off rules.  You will be constantly challenged by the computer to determine your level of ability.  If you get a question correct, you will receive a harder question; if you get a question incorrect, you will receive an easier question.  If your testing ability is at or above the passing threshold, you will pass; if it is below the passing threshold, you will fail.

The computer will end your exam when one of the three NCLEX cut-off rules is achieved:

  1. 95% confidence rule:  After the minimum number of questions are taken (75), the test will end when the computer has reached a confidence interval of at least 95%.
  2. Maximum length rule:  The test will automatically end if the maximum number of questions are taken (145).
  3. Run out of time (ROOT) rule:  The test will automatically end if the maximum length of time is reached (5 hours).
